artists statement
I look for the balance between function and design in my artwork. In the case of designing pipes I take into consideration the time it takes to build one and still have a quality product. Symmetry is not my goal it should look like it is handmade, little imperfections, small inconsistencies, no two exactly alike. I also like the idea of not buying material to create with. If I can make it, find it, turn it into something else then that's what I will do. In the case of the "Y" pipes the natural Y shape of the branch lends itself to pipes. The two holes needed to connect the stem with the bottom of the bowl actually makes the pipe easier to clean and allows for control of airflow. Even the mouth piece is detachable which allows people to use their own mouth piece and not transfer viruses. They can be purchased separately. Price is also a consideration. I cannot spend a few days building one pipe and expect someone to pay for all that production time. So quick functional, attractive, durable are desirable. That way I can offer them at a price people can afford. These are simple works of art offered at a reasonable price. If it was mass produced with every one being the same anyone could do it but then it wouldn't be art and everyone could own one. With these pipes as with other works of art, you own a one of a kind creation.
